We are seeking a part-time art teacher for kindergarten through fifth grade. From the messy (3-D, clay, group canvases) to the finely honed (drawing, painting, work with perspective), the Free Union art teacher should nurture creativity and see the artist in every student. In keeping with the tenets of progressive education, we believe that exposure to a diversity of art and culture enriches our students' education.
The school art teacher will work both independently on class projects and curriculum as well as with teachers to enhance class unit study. While the art teacher has the freedom to create a course of instruction, in general classes will include basic drawing and painting, opportunities for two and three-dimensional creation and expression, an exposure to a variety of art (kinds and cultures), and an understanding of how art impacts our lives -- from the obvious (clothing, buildings, decor, products, packaging) to the sublime (galleries or simple encounters that inspire awe, anger, curiosity, peace, and deep fulfillment). The art teacher will meet with each class for two 45-minute sessions per week and will begin in August 2021.
We are a community committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and strongly encourage applicants who will help us advance those values in any of the many ways possible. Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree or higher, an understanding and embrace of a progressive teaching philosophy, and a passion for artistic expression and purpose.
To apply, please email a resume or CV; a cover letter expressing your interest, skills, and experience; and the description of an artifact that captures your philosophy of teaching art to Head of School Ronée McLaughlin at .
