Involving students in local service projects encourages them to be active contributors in their community, fosters positive feelings, and leads to a sense of social connectedness. Several years ago, we added Service Day to our calendar. In November, children from Free Union Country School participate in service projects such as cleaning up on the Rivanna Trail, helping at the SPCA, baking breakfasts for the homeless shelter, and raking leaves at JABA (Jefferson Area Board of Aging). Children from all grades participate, and parents are encouraged to volunteer.
