Enrichment Classes

At Free Union Country School students are encouraged to express their knowledge and ideas in creative ways. Music, drama, painting, drawing, and three-dimensional work are related to project themes, school events and everyday work.

In music enrichment students learn basic theory, harmony and rhythm through experience with voice and instruments.

In addition to classroom work, students receive special instruction in science, music, drama, art, Spanish and physical education. These enrichment classes are active hands-on sessions with talented and engaging teachers. For instance, in science, students research plants suitable for attracting monarchs and other butterflies and then participate in every step of planting and maintaining a butterfly garden. When studying string instruments the students construct paper violins. In drama, students learn about mime, write and produce their own commercials, and perform skits. The art teacher provides opportunities for the students to work with a range of media, including watercolors, pastels, beading and wood.

On a field trip to the coast, 5th graders observe a marine vessel close to shore (left) and in PE, students opt to try their hand at Tug-o-war (right).

Fieldtrips help make the curriculum come alive and are therefore an integral part of the Free Union Country School experience. Parents are always welcome and encouraged to join us on these outings. Some past fieldtrips include a hike at Grave's Mountain, a tour of the state capitol building in Richmond, and a visit to a neurology lab at UVA.
